Serving Vashon Island since the 1970’s, the team at Jeffrey Cole, CPA, know the people, life style, and local specifics like nobody else. In 2015, west sound native Jeffrey Cole purchased the firm from “Williams and Callan” to ensure the firm maintained its local team and involvement in the community.

Let’s meet the team:

Jeffrey Cole, CPA – Owner & President

Jeffrey Cole

Jeff grew up in the Puget Sound after moving to Tacoma from Fairbanks, Alaska, due to a change of duty station for his father.  After attending schools in Tacoma, Graham, and Belfair, his family put down roots in Kitsap County.  After graduating from South Kitsap High School (1986), Jeff attended a college in Tacoma on an athletic scholarship then finished his degree and college baseball career at a school in Los Angeles, California.

In the early 1990’s, Jeff served on the accounting and auditing staff of Capin, Crouse, LLC (Los Angeles), a national public accounting firm specializing in providing public accounting and tax services to not for profit organizations and small businesses nationwide.  In the mid 90’s, moved to North Carolina as Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of a global not-for-profit organization with 40 employees in over twelve nations worldwide. He was responsible for oversight over all financial, tax, and personnel matters of U.S. and international operations, including serving on the Board of Directors of foreign NGO’s in Israel and Romania.

Now back in the Pacific Northwest, he is the owner of Jeffrey D. Cole, Certified Public Accountant, a public accounting practice committed to serving the full bookkeeping, tax, assurance, payroll, and planning needs of business and not for profit organizations on Vashon and the greater Puget Sound area, as well as businesses nationwide.  Jeff has frequently been featured as a speaker across the country for the Christian Camp and Conference Association on tax and accounting issues facing not for profit organizations.

Jeff’s volunteer service is extensive, including serving on the Board of Directors of Duyugda (a non-profit organization committed to the continuation and instruction of the Cherokee language among the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian), Hope for Families (domestic violence shelter and assistance organization) and Amputees in Action (a non-profit organization committed to encouraging an active lifestyle among the amputee community) and bible teacher at Christian Love drug rehabilitation and recovery center.

As an ordained minister, he actively serves in the Washington State Army National Guard as a Battalion Chaplain (CPT) currently assigned to the 1-168th General Support Aviation Battalion, 66th TAC (Joint Base Lewis McCord).

Jeff has been married to Gena for 25 years with three children, Preston (21), Madison (19), Alison (17). Hobbies include coaching local youth sports, competing in half ironman triathlons, and trying to win a ping pong match against his wife.

TAX DEPARTMENT

Michael Bates, CPA – Manager

Mike manages the tax practice, having spent six years as a Revenue Agent with the Internal Revenue Service responsible for small business / self-employed tax return examinations and audits.  Prior to that, Mike served a number of years on the tax staff of a regional accounting firm servicing the business and individual tax needs of the firm.  He is uniquely qualified to advise business clients and help navigate the Tax Code for each situation they face, particularly federal tax return examinations which emphasize tax law research; audits of books, records, and systems used to prepare tax returns such as the general ledger, financial statements, internal controls, and other external reporting requirements; tax return preparation.

Interests include boating and water sports in the summertime and snowboarding in the winter months. Mike and his family, friends, and I support the MS Society with our team “Strides for Steve” who walk every year at the South Sound MS Walk.  The team was started in 1996.

Mike is happy to have family who consumes life, including his wife and two beautiful children, ages 1 and 9.

Victoria Siems, CPA – Staff

Victoria brings with her five years of Senior Tax Associate and accounting experience within public accounting, having managed client tax and accounting services and relationships in a multi-office environment in the greater Puget Sound region.  Her broad scope skills and experiences in a multitude of entity tax structures, corporate, partnership, individual, not-for-profit, makes her valuable across many business platforms.

Victoria has a keen interest and love for music, evidenced by her seat as principal flute of the Tacoma Community College Symphonic Band since 2005. She also volunteers as bookkeeper for the Puget Sound Youth Wind Ensemble.

Victoria is married to a wonderful husband, and together have four spoiled cats

BOOKKEEPING DEPARTMENT

Becky Jenkins – Bookkeeping Manager

Becky has 20 years of experience in accounting including government, private and public industry. Her areas of particular knowledge include cost accounting, inventory, and payroll, reconciliation of accounts, Inter-company accounting with individual and consolidated financial reporting.

Her interests include spending time with my kids and granddaughter, Camping, Hiking, Attending music concerts and festivals, traveling (especially road trips).  Over the years Becky has actively supported the local community as a volunteer at Chautauqua Elementary in the Junior Great Books program, active participation in the Water Conservation Coalition, promoting education on water conservation to the youth on the island.  As a Girl Scout leader on Vashon, for 5 years the troop cared for the flower beds at the library and also participated in Operation Christmas Child every winter, preparing shoeboxes of goodies and supplies for the homeless teens on island.

Education:  Vashon High School (1990); three years of coursework at the University of Washington and City University

 

Gina Jacobs – Staff
Gina has over 30 years of full charge bookkeeping experience spanning multiple industries, including construction, rental real estate, manufacturing, wholesale and retail sales and years of experience as a local credit union loan processing representative. She particularly enjoys helping small business owners with year-end clean-up of books in preparation for income tax reporting.Gina has been a resident of Vashon Island since 1982 and is the proud parent Will, her son and Vashon High School graduate. Interests include tending to her horse and the menagerie of animals on her mini farm, organic gardening, and traveling with my partner Jim.She has volunteered as treasurer for several nonprofits including VMI Horse Association, BSA Troop 294, and the VMI Cooperative Preschool, and provides ongoing volunteer support to DOVE.

Education: Coursework completed at Bellevue College (Business Administration) and Tacoma Community College (Accounting); Human Resource Certification (ADP); Graduate of Self Storage Association Managers Certification; Member American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.

 
Kirsten Bergey – Staff
Kirsten possesses 18 years of extensive full-charge bookkeeping, payroll tax, and individual federal tax experience in multiple states. Her broad experience, skills, and experiences in a multitude of entity tax structures makes her a valuable asset to the firm and clients served.

Education: M.S. Music Performance (Northwestern University, 1997); B.S. Music Performance (Western Washington University, 1996)

 

OFFICE STAFF

Sindy Rice – Receptionist

Sindy supports the all firm staff with administrative duties. Sindy recently retired after 44 years with K2 Corporation, 36 of those years spent in Human Resources. She is a lifetime Vashon Island resident and wouldn’t consider living anywhere else. She has 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren all residing on Vashon Island. She is an active member of the Vashon Lutheran Church, enjoys the fiber arts, and spending time with her family and happy pets.
